The More the Less

In our class, Food For Thought, we learned about the global food system, colonization, and reparations. We debated about whether reperations should continue or discontinue. We learned about the origins of different ingredients. To complete this unit, Death, we created an essay about what is the biggest problem for the global food system, as if we were going to present to the UN. I wrote about why population growth is a serious issue in the video below.

It took us 200,000 years to reach 1 billion, and only 200 years to reach 7 billion. The human race has come so far in technology and sustainability. But if we don’t do something about our population, we will end in a calamity. This is what Thomas Malthus had come to believe in. This leads him to the idea that we need to let people starve, and kill off the population. According to empires of food, Thomas was not the only one that believed in his theory, they believed that the solution to this problem wasn’t simply to grow more food since the Earth could not sustain more food. But we must face this issue without causing any deaths.

Overpopulation is a serious issue because it affects the amount of food we can provide and it will change the prices of food. There are many other issues that overpopulation causes, but addressing the amount of food needed is the most important. We are currently at 7.6 billion people populating the planet, in 2018.

It has been estimated by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United States that we will reach 9.6 billion people by 2050. There would be an increase in demand that would rise by 70%. To simply meet the demands of the production of cereal, would need to be 1 billion tons, according to The Population Institute. Even if we had the plans to change and produce this much cereal, we would need to invest about $100 billion dollars per year. We will not be able to sustain a large amount of food. This does not include the time that it would take to create infrastructures to create cereal.

The Black Death was a tragic loss of 20 million people, which was one-third of the continent's population according to www.History.com. This plague managed to eliminate many people because of the large population. We look back at this history to realize that if we don’t control our population we may end up in the same situation as the people from the black death. The reason this population was such a big factor is it was easier for the plague to spread.

Unfortunately, it would be very difficult to decrease our current population, but we can control our population starting now. Creating family planning will make sure that families don’t have to go through the struggles of parenting and budgeting. Adopting children is another great way to keep our population stable. There are 107,918 children waiting to be adopted according to www.goodhousekeeping.com. This is how we can make a change, and sustain our population growth.
