Just A Sip

The we are taking is called, H2O. This class educates us on the importance of water, and how we can preserve the potable water in our world. We're about to end Unit 1, 71%, by having the experience of carrying water from a lake, to our school. After our FE (field experience,) we did conversions and calculations of the amount of water we carried. With these calculations, we compared our average water use with the USA, and another country of our choice. This class has reminded me of how privileged I am to have water in my city.

It was really awesome to experience carrying water like most people in other countries. I also learned a lot from this Unit. I learned that many people that do this become strong over time, since they carry gallons of water everyday. Some people have to travel more than once to carry their daily water usage. The country that I chose was Haiti. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. With more than 70% of the people in it, having no access to clean water. The average use of water per person every day is about 4 gallons of water. I use about 77 gallons of water a day, but the average use of water a day for an US citizen is 150 gallons!

In our FE, we wanted to see what it would be like to carry water like other countries such as Haiti. We planned on carrying any sort of jug all the way to the nearest water source, which was the North Branch Canal. The Canal was .35 miles away from the school, which was a 5 min. walk. When you're carrying more than 9 gallons of water that distance for the first time, it feels exhausting! Your tired just from picking up a cooler to start walking, but it was something to bear to accomplish our goal. If I had to go back and do it again, I would've brought a cooler with wheels. This Unit has taught me a lot about water, and how everyone uses it. It's important to conserve the amount of water we have on Earth, since less than 1% of it is potable!

Call to Action

I recommend that you Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth, because this saves a lot of water. A way more efficient way of reducing the water you use, is washing by hand, instead of using a dishwasher. Washing by hand uses about 20 gallons, while a dishwasher can you a maximum of 3 gallons a minute. Most dishwashers can 2 hours to clean dishes, but older ones can take 1 hour. Even so, in one hour that can use up 180 gallons a load, which is more than the average use of water in the USA.
